Der Unterbrecherkontakt sorgt dafür, dass zum Zündzeitpunkt ein Zündfunken erzeugt wird. Hierzu unterbricht er den von der Batterie zur Zündspule fließenden Strom. Dadurch wird das Magnetfeld in der Sekundärwicklung geändert und es entsteht ein Impuls von 10.000 bis 25.000 Volt. Mit diesem erzeugt die Zündkerze einen Funken im Zylinder.
