The thermostat is responsible for regulating the cooling circuit. If the engine isn't yet at operating temperature, the coolant circulates only through the water pump and the engine. When operating temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and the water cooler is integrated into the cooling circuit. The actual cooling now begins.
