But even then, they will wear out over time. Removing the steering head bearings: When replacing the bearings, completely new sets of bearings are installed at the top and bottom. Special tools for removing and installing bearings use threaded spindles without heating. The following describes how to replace the bearings using the standard DIY method: 1. Using a long mandrel and a 250-gram hammer, gradually drive out the upper and lower bearing shells in a crisscross pattern using light blows. 2. The inner race of the lower bearing is still on the steering stem. Clean it of any grease, warm it briefly with a hot air gun, place the entire component on a sturdy wooden surface, and carefully hammer the inner race...
