Einer der bekanntesten ILO-Motoren ist der ILO-PIANO. Dieser lief damals schon mit einem Zahnriemen ansatt einer lauten Kette. Gegründet wurde das Unternehmen 1911 in Altona (Hamburg). Im Jahr 1918 wurde der erste Zweitaktmotor entwickelt, der in verschiedenen Geräten zur Anwendung kam. Vorallem in den 1940er Jahren erhielt ILO einen Auftragsboom, denn in der Bevölkerung entstand eine Motorisierungswelle und viele Motorradhersteller entschieden sich für den Einbau eines ILO-Motors.

Der Kolbenring ist nicht kreisrund und auch nicht geschlossen. Erst im Einbauzustand wird der Ring in Kreisform gedrückt. Zu seinen Aufgaben zählen die richtige Dosierung des Schmieröls, die Ableitung der Verbrennungswärme und die Abdichtung des Arbeitsraumes.
