Die Yamaha Motor Company wurde als Tochtergesellschaft der Yamaha Corporation 1955 gegründet und ist heute ein eigenständiger Konzern. Das erste gebaute Motorrad war die YA-1, eine Kopie der DKW RT125 mit 123 ccm und 5,6 PS.

Der Kolbenring ist nicht kreisrund und auch nicht geschlossen. Erst im Einbauzustand wird der Ring in Kreisform gedrückt. Zu seinen Aufgaben zählen die richtige Dosierung des Schmieröls, die Ableitung der Verbrennungswärme und die Abdichtung des Arbeitsraumes.
