Im Jahr 1886 gründeten die Marschütz Brüder das Unternehmen und produzierten bis 1928 hauptsächlich Fahrräder. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt lohnte sich die Fertigung von kleinen Motorrädern, aufgrund von Führerschein- und Steuerfreiheit, wieder. Die Hercules Werke verwendeten seit 1930 Motoren von Fichtel & Sachs.
