In 1886/87, Carl Marschütz founded the "Nuremberg Velocipede Factory Hercules" together with his brother. The production was initially focused on bicycles. From 1928 on, the production of motorcycles became profitable again and Hercules produced light motorcycles up to 200 cm³. When in 1930 the production of engines started at Fichtel & Sachs in Schweinfurt, they were immediately used at Hercules.
