Die 1886 unter dem Firmen Namen "Velozipedfabrik Marschütz & Co." gegründeten Hercules-Werke, waren ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Nürnberger Motorradindustrie. Zunächst lag der Focus auf der Produktion von Fahrrädern. Im Jahre 1928 begann man mit der Produktion von motorisierten Zweirädern bis zu einem Hubraum von 200 ccm³. Dabei wurde eng mit dem Schweinfurter Unternehmen Fichtel & Sachs zusammengearbeitet, welches für die Herstellung von Motoren bekannt war.
